History of Gallatin Gateway

From Salesville to Gallatin Gateway

The area was first known as Salesville. It was named after Z. Sales, a pioneer who ran a saw mill business. He and his family helped establish the town on their property.

In 1927, the town's name was changed to Gallatin Gateway. This happened when The Milwaukee Road, a railroad company, made the town the end point of a train line. This line brought passengers who were traveling to Yellowstone National Park through the scenic Gallatin Canyon.

The Gallatin Gateway Inn

When the railroad arrived, a large and fancy building called the Gallatin Gateway Inn was built. This inn served as the passenger depot for the trains. It opened on June 17, 1927.

The Gallatin Gateway Inn was famous for being one of the most luxurious hotels of its time. In 1980, the Inn was recognized as a Historic Landmark. This happened after a lot of work was done to restore it to its original beauty.

Today, Gallatin Gateway has a good brick school house, some important business buildings, and comfortable homes. It continues to be a charming community with a rich history.
