Kurrum River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Kurrum River and Tochi River are two important rivers that flow through parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. They help bring water to many areas, especially for farming.

The Kurrum River

The Kurrum River, also known as the Karam River, flows through the beautiful Kurrum Valley. This valley stretches from Afghanistan into Pakistan, crossing the border from the Paktia Province in Afghanistan into the Kohat region of Pakistan. It flows from west to east. The river is about 150 kilometers (about 93 miles) west-southwest of the famous Khyber Pass.

The Tochi River

The Tochi River is another important river, sometimes called the Gambila River. It flows in North Waziristan, which is a region in Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

Where the Tochi River Starts

The Tochi River begins in the hills about six miles south of where the Kurrum River starts (the Sufed Koh River hills). It flows in the same direction as the Kurrum River, running side-by-side with it for a while.

Why the Tochi River is Important

The Tochi River flows eastward and eventually joins the Kurrum River, and then both flow into the mighty Indus River. It is a very important river for the people living in the Dawar valley. This is because it helps to irrigate (water) a large amount of land that it flows through. This includes land belonging to the Bakkakhel Wazirs, and the Miri and Bannuchis people.

The Tochi River forms the northern border of Waziristan, while the Gomal River forms the southern border of South Waziristan.
