History of Garden City

Garden City was officially founded on August 2, 1938. Its creation was linked to the rules in the nearby city of Greeley at the time.

Founding the Town

In 1935, voters in Greeley decided to keep certain restrictions on businesses within their city limits. This meant that some types of stores could not operate in Greeley. After this decision, newspapers in Greeley wrote about the idea of a new town being formed nearby where these businesses could exist.

The area where Garden City was formed was once a 10-acre property called Ray's Cottage Camp. It was owned by Mrs. A.F. Ray. To create a new town, the law required a petition signed by at least 30 residents who also owned land. Mrs. Ray helped meet this requirement by selling small cabins and lots in her camp. Some of these were sold for as little as $100.

Becoming an Official Town

The process of making Garden City an official town was not easy. According to newspaper articles from that time, the town's incorporation was challenged twice. This means people tried to stop it from becoming a town. However, Garden City finally became officially incorporated on its third attempt in 1938. The official document shows the incorporation date as August 2, 1938.
