History of Gardiner

How Gardiner Got Its Name

The name Gardiner comes from Johnson Gardner. He was a fur trapper who worked in the area around 1830–1831. He called the beautiful valley where the Gardner River starts Gardner's Hole. The river was first called Gardner's Fork. Later, it took on Gardner's name.

Explorers who visited the area later did not know about Johnson Gardner. In 1870, the Washburn–Langford–Doane Expedition passed through. They started calling the river Gardiner by mistake. This spelling was later confirmed in reports by Hiram M. Chittenden and Nathaniel P. Langford.

Early Settlers and the Post Office

In 1871, the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871 came to the Gardiner area. They met two men, J.C. McCartney and H. R. Horr. These men had claimed land and started a ranch and bath house. They built a simple hotel at Mammoth. They were not asked to leave until many years after Yellowstone Park was created.

McCartney was also known as Jim Gardiner. People sent messages to his hotel guests addressed to: Jim on the Gardiner. On February 9, 1880, a post office was set up just outside the park. This is when Gardiner, Montana, officially began.

The Railway Connection

In 1883, the Northern Pacific Railway finished building its Park Branch Line. This line went from Livingston, Montana to Cinnabar, which is north of Gardiner. In 1903, the railway line was extended all the way to Gardiner. However, train service at the Gardiner station stopped in 1948.
