Gardyne Castle is an old, strong house built in the 1500s. It's a type of building called a tower house. You can find it in Angus, Scotland, about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) southwest of a place called Friockheim. Even today, people still live in Gardyne Castle! It's also a very important historical site, protected as a Category A listed building because of its special history and design.

The Story of Gardyne Castle

Building a New Home

The Gardyne family built this castle. An old stone at the castle shows it was finished in 1568. This stone also has the symbol of King James VI and the words "God save the King." The castle's design, with its round towers called bartizans, was a way to show loyalty. It connected the castle to the Royal Stewart family and the new king, instead of the previous queen, Mary, Queen of Scots.

Family Rivalries and New Owners

For a long time, the Gardyne family had a big disagreement, or "feud," with the Guthrie family. The Guthries lived at nearby Guthrie Castle. This feud became such a problem that in 1632, the king decided to take away the land from both families. After this, the Gardynes moved to another home nearby. Gardyne Castle then became the property of the Lyell family, who were from Dysart.

Changes Over Time

The castle has changed quite a bit over the years. A large new part was added in 1740. This section now forms the middle part of the castle you see today. More changes happened in 1910. An architect named Harold Tarbolton helped to update the castle. He added modern features like electricity. The castle was also carefully fixed up and improved again in the early 2000s.
