Gareth Wyn Williams, also known as Lord Williams of Mostyn, was an important Welsh politician. He was a lawyer and a member of the Labour Party. He held very important jobs in the British government, like leading the House of Lords, from 2001 until he passed away in 2003.

Early Life and Education

Gareth Williams was born on February 5, 1941, near Prestatyn, a town in North Wales. His parents were Albert Thomas and Selina Williams. He went to Rhyl Grammar School and later studied at Queens' College, Cambridge University.

Legal Career

Gareth Williams became a barrister in 1965, which means he could argue cases in court. He was a very skilled lawyer. In 1978, he became a Queen's Counsel (QC), which is a special title for experienced lawyers. He also worked as a judge for a time. From 1987 to 1989, he led the group of lawyers in the Wales and Chester area.

Political Journey

In 1992, Gareth Williams became a life peer, which gave him the title of Baron Williams of Mostyn. This meant he could sit in the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament. He spoke for the Labour Party on legal matters and later on issues in Northern Ireland.

When the Labour Party won the election in 1997, he became a minister in the Home Office. In 1999, he was made the Attorney General for England and Wales, and also for Northern Ireland. This job meant he was the chief legal advisor to the government.

In 2001, he became the Leader of the House of Lords. This was a very important role, as he was in charge of the government's business in the House of Lords. He also held other important titles like Lord Privy Seal and Lord President of the Council.

Respected by Colleagues

Lord Williams was highly respected by other members of the House of Lords. They even voted him the most outstanding life peer since the title was created. This shows how much his colleagues valued his work and his character.

Personal Life

Gareth Williams married Pauline Clarke in 1962, and they had three children together. They later divorced. In 1994, he married Veena M. Russell, and they had one daughter, Imogen.

He passed away suddenly from a heart attack on September 20, 2003, at his home in Evenlode, England. He was 62 years old. He was buried at St Michael and all Angels Church in Great Tew, Oxfordshire.
