Where is Gargett?
Gargett is in the central eastern part of Queensland. It is about 52 kilometers (32 miles) away from the city of Mackay.
Gargett's Past
Gargett got its name from the Gargett railway station. The station was named after John Garget. He was a contractor who helped build the railway. His name was accidentally misspelled.
Early Schools
Barker's Creek Provisional School opened on September 16, 1895. It became Barker's Creek State School in 1909. This school closed down in 1954.
Gargett State School opened later, on August 20, 1914. This school celebrated its 100th birthday in 2014.
Railway History
The railway line reached Gargett in 1902. The Gargett railway station was very busy. This was especially true during the sugar cane harvesting season.
Post Office
A post office opened in Gargett by October 1910. Before that, a smaller "receiving office" had been open since 1909.
Education in Gargett
Gargett State School is a government primary school. It teaches students from Prep to Year 6. The school is located on Tom Lynch Street. In 2018, 25 students attended the school.
There are no high schools in Gargett. The closest government high school is Mirani State High School. It is located in Mirani, which is to the east.
Local Services
The Mackay Regional Council provides a mobile library service. It visits Mackay-Eungella Road every two weeks.
The Gargett branch of the Queensland Country Women's Association meets here. They gather at the QCWA Hall on Jim Moule Street.
