Garry Roberts (born 16 June 1950 – died 9 November 2022) was a talented Irish musician. He was famous as the lead guitarist for the band The Boomtown Rats. This band started in 1976. Garry and Johnnie Fingers decided to form a band. They found other members: Pete Briquette (bass), Gerry Cott (guitar), Simon Crowe (drums), and Bob Geldof (singer).
Garry Roberts' Music Career
Garry Roberts was a founding member of The Boomtown Rats. He played lead guitar for the band. The Boomtown Rats became very popular. They were active from 1976 until 1986.
After the band broke up, Garry continued working in music. He became a sound engineer. He worked with bands like Simply Red and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.
Garry took a break from playing guitar in public. After ten years, he started playing again. He and Simon Crowe, the drummer from The Boomtown Rats, formed a new band. They called themselves The Velcro Flies.
In 2008, Garry and Simon started playing as The Rats. They performed songs from the first three Boomtown Rats albums. They toured across Europe and the UK. Garry also taught guitar workshops in schools. He introduced kids to the electric guitar. He taught them basic techniques and about pop and rock history.
In 2013, The Boomtown Rats got back together. Garry Roberts and Simon Crowe joined the reunited band. They toured all over the world. In 2020, they released a new album. It was called Citizens Of Boomtown.
