The Life of Garvin Bushell
Early Life and Musical Journey
Garvin Bushell was born in Springfield, Ohio. His birth name was Garvin Lamont Payne. When he was young, his father passed away. Later, his mother married Joseph Davenport Bushell. Garvin then took his stepfather's last name, Bushell.
Garvin Bushell was a very talented musician. He played many different instruments. These included the clarinet, alto clarinet, oboe, English horn, flute, saxophone, bassoon, and contrabassoon. He played both Jazz music and classical music.
Working with Jazz Legends
Garvin Bushell was well-known as a "sideman" in jazz music. A sideman is a musician who plays with a band or a main artist, but isn't the leader. He performed and recorded with many famous jazz musicians. Some of these legends included Fletcher Henderson, Bunk Johnson, Fats Waller, Cab Calloway, Eric Dolphy, Gil Evans, and John Coltrane.
Later in his life, Garvin Bushell moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. There, he shared his musical knowledge. He worked as a music teacher, helping others learn to play instruments.

Garvin Bushell was married twice. His first wife was Marie Roberts. They got married in Manhattan in 1923. Marie was also involved in music. She was part of the chorus for the "Chocolate Kiddies" show. This show toured Europe in 1925, and Garvin was part of the band for that same tour.
In 1965, Garvin married Louise Olivari in Manhattan. They stayed married until his passing in 1991. Garvin and Louise had two sons together, named Garvin P. Bushell and Philip Bushell.
