Gary Orlando Forbes is a former professional basketball player from Panama. He was born on February 25, 1985. Gary played college basketball at two different universities: first at the University of Virginia, and then at the University of Massachusetts. He played as a Small forward during his career.

High School Basketball Journey
Gary Forbes moved to Brooklyn, New York with his mom when he was a kid. He played basketball at Benjamin Banneker Academy in Brooklyn. During his high school career, Gary scored an amazing 1,512 points. He also grabbed 766 rebounds. He set new school records for points, rebounds, and blocked shots.
As a senior, Gary was named the Newsday Player of the Year for Brooklyn. He was also a finalist for the McDonald's All-American team. In his junior year, he averaged 27 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists per game. During his senior year, he averaged 31 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, and three blocked shots. He even scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a championship game at Madison Square Garden.
College Basketball Career
Gary Forbes was a top basketball prospect coming out of high school. ESPN ranked him as the #4 shooting guard in the country for 2003. He decided to play for the University of Virginia.
Playing for Virginia
As a freshman in 2003–04, Gary played in all 31 games for Virginia. He started 17 of those games. He averaged 7.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. He was second on his team in blocked shots and steals. In one game against Minnesota, he scored a season-high 22 points.
In his second year (sophomore season) in 2004–05, Gary played in 29 games. He averaged 9.4 points and 4.1 rebounds. He scored a season-high 23 points against #4 North Carolina. After this season, Gary decided to transfer to another school. He chose the University of Massachusetts. Because of NCAA rules, he had to sit out the 2005–06 season.
Success at UMass
In the 2006–07 season, Gary started playing for the Minutemen. He started in 23 of their 33 games. He averaged 13.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. He scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a game against Temple. Gary helped the Minutemen win their first Atlantic 10 title since 1996. They also made it to the second round of the NIT.
In his senior year (2007–08), Gary was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year. He was also chosen for the All-Conference First Team. He averaged 20.3 points per game, which was tied for the league lead. Gary helped UMass have a great run in the NIT. They made it all the way to the final game before losing to Ohio State. He was named to the NIT's All-Tournament team.
Gary scored a total of 1,639 points during his college career.
Professional Basketball Journey
After college, Gary Forbes tried to make it to the NBA. He attended the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in 2008 but was not chosen in the 2008 NBA draft. He played for the Washington Wizards in their summer mini-camp.
NBA Development League and International Play
Gary was picked #4 overall in the 2008 NBA Development League draft by the Sioux Falls Skyforce. He played 22 games for them before being traded to the Tulsa 66ers. Overall that season, he averaged 17.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. He also took part in the D-League All-Star weekend.
After his time in the D-League, Gary played for several teams around the world. He played in the Philippines, Venezuela, and Italy. In 2010, he played for Ironi Kfar Hamaccabia Ramat Gan in the Israeli Basketball Super League. He averaged 20.3 points per game, which was the best in that league.
Playing in the NBA
In July 2010, Gary got another chance at the NBA. He played for the Houston Rockets in the summer league. On September 18, 2010, the Denver Nuggets invited him to their training camp. He played well enough to make their team roster for the season.
On December 10, 2011, Gary signed with the Toronto Raptors. He officially joined the Raptors on December 13, 2011. In July 2012, he was traded to the Houston Rockets but was later waived by them in October 2012.
Later Career
After his time in the NBA, Gary continued to play basketball professionally. In December 2012, he joined the Zhejiang Lions in the Chinese Basketball Association. He also played for teams in Puerto Rico, the NBA Development League (now G-League), Argentina, and Greece. In 2018, he played for Al-Ittihad Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. His professional career ended in 2020 with the Saigon Heat.
Playing for Panama
Gary Forbes also played for the Panama men's national basketball team. He represented his country in several international tournaments. In 2007, he played in the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship in Las Vegas. He averaged 17.8 points per game and scored a high of 29 points against Argentina. He also played for Panama in the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship and the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup.
The Basketball Tournament (TBT)
Gary Forbes also competed in The Basketball Tournament (TBT), which is shown on ESPN. In the summer of 2017, he played for the Talladega Knights. He scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds in one game. He also played for Talladega in 2016. In 2018, Gary played for Gael Nation in TBT.
Personal Life
Gary Forbes has type 1 diabetes. This is a health condition that runs in his family. He found out he had diabetes when he was 19 years old. At first, he kept it a secret because he was worried it might affect his basketball career. Gary has five older brothers and sisters.
