Gary Stewart Teale (born 21 July 1978) is a Scottish professional football player and coach. He played as a winger.

Gary started his football journey in Scotland in 1995. He played for Clydebank and Ayr United. In 2001, he moved to England. He joined Wigan Athletic. Gary helped Wigan move up from the third division to the top league for the first time. He even played in the 2006 Football League Cup final.

After Wigan, Gary moved to Derby County. He helped them get promoted to the Premier League too. While at Derby, he also played on loan for Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley. He played over 100 games for Derby.

In 2010, Gary signed with Sheffield Wednesday. A year later, he joined St Mirren. He helped St Mirren win the Scottish League Cup in 2013. Gary later became the manager of St Mirren in 2014. He left this role in May 2015. Gary also played for the Scotland national team. He earned 13 international appearances, called caps, between 2006 and 2009.

Playing Career

Starting Out in Scotland

Gary Teale was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He began his football career at Clydebank. As a young player, he trained with Davie Cooper, a famous footballer. Gary felt Cooper greatly influenced his development.

In 1995, at just 16 years old, Gary made his first team debut. This was in a Scottish League Cup match. During his first season, he often came on as a substitute, meaning he started the game on the bench. He scored his first goal for Clydebank that season.

By 1996, Gary became a regular player for the first team. His strong performances led to him being called up for the Scotland under-21s. He even had trials with big English clubs like Tottenham Hotspur. However, a move didn't happen then. Clydebank was later relegated, meaning they moved down to a lower league.

In 1997, Gary was in a car accident. He broke his collarbone but was lucky to recover. He struggled to get back into the first team for a while. However, Clydebank finished second in their league. This meant they were promoted back to the higher division.

In 1998, Clydebank had money problems. Gary was sold to Ayr United for £70,000. He chose to stay in Scotland, feeling he wasn't ready to leave home yet. He scored his first goal for Ayr United in his home debut. He also played a key role in a big Scottish Cup win against local rivals Kilmarnock.

Success with Wigan Athletic

In 2001, Gary joined Wigan Athletic. The club paid £275,000 for him. He made his debut the very next day. He scored his first goal for Wigan in February 2002.

In the 2002–03 season, Wigan won the Second Division title. This meant they were promoted to a higher league. In the 2004–05 season, Wigan achieved another promotion. They reached the Premiership for the first time in their history. After this, Gary signed a new contract.

Gary also helped Wigan reach their first major cup final. This was the 2006 Football League Cup Final. They finished as runners-up to Manchester United. Gary was the only player to play in every match during that cup run. He played the entire 90 minutes of the final game. After six years, Gary left Wigan to join Derby County in January 2007.

Time at Derby County

Gary joined Derby County to help them get promoted to the Premiership. He made his debut in January 2007. He scored his first goal for Derby a month later. However, he didn't always play regularly towards the end of the season. He wasn't in the squad for Derby's big playoff final win. This win earned Derby promotion to the Premier League.

In the 2007–08 season, Derby struggled in the top league. Gary played in 22 games, mostly as a substitute. He was then sent on loan to Plymouth Argyle. A loan means a player temporarily plays for another team. The manager wanted him to regain his confidence.

In the 2008–09 season, Gary was loaned out again, this time to Barnsley. When he returned to Derby, he started playing more often. He became a favorite among Derby fans, earning the nickname "Tealinho." He scored his second goal for the club in February 2009. He made his 100th appearance for Derby in January 2010.

Gary left Derby County in June 2010. He had played 104 games and scored five goals for the club.

Moving to Sheffield Wednesday and St Mirren

On 2 July 2010, Gary signed a two-year contract with Sheffield Wednesday. He scored his first goal for them in an FA Cup match in November 2010. He scored again a few days later. Gary left Sheffield Wednesday in July 2011.

He then signed a two-year deal with St Mirren. He scored his first goal for St Mirren in a friendly match. Gary was a key part of the team that won the 2012–13 Scottish League Cup. St Mirren beat Heart of Midlothian 3–2 in the final. Gary made a great run and pass that led to St Mirren's equalizing goal. In 2013, he signed a new one-year deal with the club.

In May 2014, Gary signed a new two-year deal. He took on a player-coach role, meaning he would play and also help coach the team. In December 2014, he became the caretaker manager after the previous manager was sacked. In January 2015, he was appointed St Mirren manager until the end of the season. However, St Mirren was relegated (moved down a league) that season. Gary left his managerial role in May 2015.

International Career

Gary Teale first played for the Scotland under-21s in 1996.

His good performances for Wigan led to his first call-up to the Scotland national football team in 2004. However, he had to pull out due to injury. He earned his first cap (an appearance in an international match) for Scotland in March 2006.

He played for his country off and on, including important games in Scotland's Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. He earned a total of 13 caps for Scotland between 2006 and 2009.
