Gary Dajaun Trent Jr. (born January 18, 1999) is an American professional basketball player. He plays for the Milwaukee Bucks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before joining the NBA, Gary played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils.

Gary's Early Life and High School Basketball

Gary Trent Jr. was born on January 18, 1999. His dad, Gary Trent, was also a professional basketball player. Gary Jr. has three brothers: Garyson, Grayson, and Graydon. His father played in the NBA for nine years. He also won a gold medal in the 1993 U.S. Olympic Festival.

Playing at Apple Valley High School

Gary Jr. started high school at Apple Valley High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota. In his second year, he scored about 21.5 points per game. By his third year, he was scoring 26.4 points and grabbing 5.8 rebounds per game. He was named Minnesota Player of the Year. He also earned first-team All-American honors from Maxpreps.

Moving to Prolific Prep Academy

Before his final year of high school, Gary Jr. moved to Prolific Prep Academy in Napa, California. There, he averaged 31.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. He helped his team achieve a great 29–3 record. After this impressive year, he was chosen to play in two special games: the 2017 Jordan Brand Classic and the 2017 McDonald's All-American Boys Game.

Top High School Player

Gary Trent Jr. was considered one of the best high school basketball players in 2017. Experts like Scout.com, Rivals.com, and ESPN rated him as a five-star recruit. He was ranked as the number 8 player overall in his high school class. He was also the number 1 shooting guard.

College Basketball at Duke University

Gary Trent Jr. decided to play college basketball for Duke University. He officially committed on November 10, 2016. His group of new players at Duke was very strong. It included seven highly-rated recruits, with four of them, including Gary, being five-star players. This group was seen as the best new class in the country.

Highlights of His College Season

Duke started the season as the number 1 team. They had four freshmen, including Gary, starting games. On December 9, 2017, Gary Jr. scored 25 points against Boston College. He also tied a Duke freshman record by making six three-point shots.

Later, on January 15, Gary scored a career-high 30 points against Miami. He helped Duke make a big comeback win in that game. Because of his great play, he was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Player and Rookie of the Week on January 22, 2018.

Duke in the Tournaments

Duke entered the ACC tournament as the second seed. They won their first game but then lost to their rival, North Carolina, in the semi-finals.

Duke then played in the 2018 NCAA men's basketball tournament. They were the second seed in their region. They won several games, beating teams like Iona, Rhode Island, and Syracuse. This helped them reach the Elite Eight round. However, they lost a close game in overtime to Kansas.

After the season, Gary and four other freshmen teammates decided to become professional basketball players.

Gary Trent Jr.'s NBA Career

Starting with the Portland Trail Blazers (2018–2021)

On June 21, 2018, Gary Trent Jr. was chosen by the Sacramento Kings in the NBA draft. He was the 37th player picked overall. Soon after, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. Gary signed a three-year contract with the Trail Blazers on July 6.

In his first year, Gary played in 15 NBA games. He averaged 2.7 points per game. For much of that season, he also played for the Texas Legends in the NBA G League. In his second and third years, Gary's performance got much better. He played more minutes and scored more points.

Playing for the Toronto Raptors (2021–2024)

On March 25, 2021, Gary Trent Jr. joined the Toronto Raptors in a trade. He quickly showed his scoring ability. On March 31, he scored 31 points in a game. On April 10, he had an amazing game, scoring a career-high 44 points. He made 17 out of 19 shots in that game, helping the Raptors win by a lot.

On August 2, 2021, Gary signed a new three-year contract with the Raptors. He continued to play well. In January 2022, he had a fantastic stretch of games. He scored 32 points against the Charlotte Hornets and then 32 points again the next night against the Chicago Bulls. On January 29, he scored 33 points and had five steals in a triple-overtime win.

Gary made nine three-pointers in a game on January 31, 2022. He scored 31 points in that game. He then had five straight games where he scored 30 points or more. Only one other Raptors player had done that before. On February 10, he scored a season-high 42 points. He also had five steals and made five three-pointers.

On June 20, 2023, Gary decided to stay with the Raptors for the 2023–24 season. On December 18, 2023, he achieved his first career double-double. He scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a win. On April 5, 2024, Gary helped the Raptors end a long losing streak. He scored 31 points in a win against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Joining the Milwaukee Bucks (2024–Present)

On July 20, 2024, Gary Trent Jr. signed a one-year deal with the Milwaukee Bucks. He continued to show his scoring touch. On February 9, 2025, he scored 23 points in a win. On April 10, he scored a season-high 29 points.

In the 2025 NBA playoffs, Gary had a standout performance. In Game 3 of the first round, he scored 37 points. He made nine three-pointers in that game, which tied a Bucks playoff record. Even though the Bucks were eliminated, Gary scored 33 points in their final playoff game. On July 8, 2025, Gary signed a new two-year contract to stay with the Bucks.
