Gary Dajaun Trent Sr. (born in Columbus, Ohio, on September 22, 1974) is a former professional basketball player from America. He played as a power forward. Gary Trent Sr. is also the father of current NBA player Gary Trent Jr..
Early Life and College Basketball
Gary Trent Sr. grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He played high school basketball at Hamilton Township High School. In his final year, he set a national high school record. He made 81.4 percent of his shots from the field.
After high school, Gary Trent Sr. played college basketball for Ohio University. He was part of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Because of his strong and powerful playing style, people called him "The Shaq of the MAC." This nickname compared him to the famous player Shaquille O'Neal.
Trent was named MAC Player of the Year for three years in a row (1993–1995). This is a big award for the best player in the conference. His jersey number, 20, was retired by Ohio Bobcats on January 21, 2012. This means no other player on the team will wear that number again. In 2013, he was also added to the MAC Hall of Fame.
Professional Basketball Career
After college, Gary Trent Sr. was chosen by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1995 NBA draft. He was the 11th player picked overall. Right after being drafted, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Trent played in the NBA from 1995 to 2004. During this time, he played for several teams. These teams included the Portland Trail Blazers, Toronto Raptors, Dallas Mavericks, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
After his time in the NBA, Trent continued his career overseas. He played for the Greek team Panellinios B.C. in the 2004–05 season. He also played briefly for Pallacanestro Virtus Roma in Italy in late 2005. He then returned to Greece to play for Panellinios BC again for the 2006–07 season.
Personal Life
Gary Trent Sr.'s son, Gary Trent Jr., is also a professional basketball player. Gary Trent Jr. played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils.
In the 2018 NBA draft, Gary Trent Jr. was drafted by the Sacramento Kings. He was the 37th pick in the second round. Like his father, he was traded right away to the Portland Trail Blazers. In 2021, Gary Trent Jr. was traded to the Toronto Raptors.
