Gassaway Sellman Grimes (born November 16, 1816 – died July 3, 1875) was an important doctor from Maryland. He helped many people during his life. He also married Susan Dorsey, who came from a well-known family called the Dorsey family.

Dr. Grimes's Early Life

Gassaway Sellman Grimes was born in Maryland on November 16, 1816. His father, Cornelius Grimes, was a soldier in the War of 1812. His mother was Elizabeth Sellman.

Young Gassaway went to the old Barnesville Academy. He then studied medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He finished his studies and became a doctor in 1838.

Family and Early Career

On June 25, 1839, Dr. Grimes married Susan H. Dorsey in Frederick County, Maryland. Susan was a descendant of Edward Dorsey. Soon after their marriage, by 1840, Dr. Grimes moved to Carroll County, Maryland.

Dr. Grimes was also interested in politics. He supported William Henry Harrison for President in the election of 1840. He was also a member of the Ridgeville Methodist Episcopal Church.

Running a Hotel

At one point, Dr. Grimes was the owner of the City Hotel in Frederick, Maryland. He ran the hotel with his brother-in-law, Basil E. Dorsey.

Serving in the Civil War

During the American Civil War, Dr. Grimes served with the Confederate Army. He was later captured during the war.

His Family and Later Life

Gassaway Sellman Grimes was related to some notable people. He was a descendant of Colonel Nicholas Gassaway. He was also the grandfather of a famous sculptor named Rudulph Evans.

His daughter, Kate, married T. M. Turner. His son, Robert Lee, also became a doctor. Dr. Grimes passed away at his home in Gainesboro on July 3, 1875. He is buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal.
