Who Was Gaston Doumergue?
Gaston Doumergue came from a Protestant family. He was also a Freemason, which is a member of a social and charitable organization.
He started his political career with the Radical Party, which was a center-left group. As he got older, his political views shifted more towards the right.
Early Political Career
Doumergue first became Prime Minister of France from December 9, 1913, to June 9, 1914. This was a very important role, leading the government.
During World War I, he served as the Minister for the Colonies. This meant he was in charge of France's overseas territories.
In 1917, he went on a special trip to Russia. There, he talked with Tsar Nicholas II about future peace plans with Germany and Austria-Hungary.
Becoming President of France
On June 13, 1924, Gaston Doumergue was elected as the 13th President of France. He was the only Protestant person ever to hold this high office.
He served as president for seven years, until June 13, 1931. People generally liked him a lot, especially after his predecessor, Alexandre Millerand, who was not as popular.
A fun fact about his presidency is that he was single when he was elected. He became the first President of France to get married while still in office!
Later Years and Second Term as Prime Minister
After his time as president, Doumergue returned to lead the government again. He became Prime Minister for a second time from February 6 to November 8, 1934.
This second term happened after some serious riots in Paris on February 6, 1934. He led a "national unity government," which meant it included politicians from different parties.
Gaston Doumergue passed away in his hometown of Aigues-Vives on June 18, 1937. He was 73 years old.
