Gates is a small city in Oregon, United States. It sits on the border of two counties: Linn and Marion. Most of the city's population lives in Marion County.
In 2020, about 548 people lived in Gates. The part of Gates in Marion County is near the larger city of Salem. The part in Linn County is closer to Albany and Lebanon.

History of Gates
The first post office in the Gates area opened in 1882. It was called Henness, named after Jane Henness, who was the first postmaster. The post office later moved and changed its name to Gates. This new name honored Mary Gates, one of the oldest settlers in the area. The city officially became a city in 1950.
In 2020, a large wildfire called the Beachie Creek Fire started nearby. Strong winds caused the fire to grow very quickly. It threatened the town and caused a lot of damage to Gates.

Gates is a small city, covering about 0.65 square miles (1.67 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the city limits.

Education
Students in Gates attend schools in the Santiam Canyon School District. Younger students go to Santiam Elementary Schools. Middle school students attend Mill City Middle School. High school students go to Santiam High School in Mill City.
The old elementary school in Gates closed in 2012. It was later sold to a group called Upward Bound Camp. This group now uses the building as a camp for adults with special needs.
