Gavrilović is a company from Croatia that makes delicious meat products. They are famous for their sausages and salami. The company is located in a city called Petrinja. Its history in that area goes back a very long time, all the way to 1690!

A Long History of Meat Making

The story of Gavrilović started way back in 1690. Two people named Ivan and Petar Gavrilović began selling meat in Petrinja.

By 1775, the Gavrilović family was known as one of the main founders of the local butchers' group. In the early 1800s, they even supplied meat to Napoleon's army!

The company we know today officially began in 1821. They were given permission to make meat products for the soldiers in the Croatian Military Frontier. This helped them grow their business.

In 1883, Gavrilović started making their special winter salami. People knew it as hrvatska salama or gavrilovićka.

The company was a family business called "Mate Gavrilović i drug." In 1889, its name changed to "First Croatian Factory of Salami, Dried Meat, and Fat." About 50 people worked there at that time.

In 1902, the company became a modern business and started selling its products to other countries. They sent their meats to places like Hungary, Switzerland, Germany, Palestine, and Egypt.

About 20 years later, they began making canned food and ready-to-eat meals. After World War II, the company was taken over by the government in Yugoslavia. It was renamed "Gavrilović" again.

At this time, the company grew very big, with 4,500 employees. They opened their first stores in Zagreb. They also started exporting to France, Italy, Czechoslovakia, England, and Austria. In the 1960s, they even began selling their products in the United States.

In 1991, the company was given back to the Gavrilović family, specifically to Đuro (Georg) Gavrilović.

The company faced some damage during the 2020 Petrinja earthquake. However, they quickly got back to making their products soon after.

Jelica: The Famous Logo Girl

The well-known logo for Gavrilović shows a three-year-old girl named Jelica Cekuš. She is holding a winter salami. Jelica was a cousin of Đuro Gavrilović senior.

This famous logo was created in 1931. It was designed by a Croatian comic book artist and illustrator named Andrija Maurović.
