History of Gaschurn-Partenen
The names of places in this area, which come from the old Romansh language, were first written down a long time ago. "Gaschurra" was mentioned in 1423, and "Parthenna" in 1499. Some mountain pastures, like Zeinisalpe, were even mentioned earlier, around 1089.
For many centuries, farmers from Switzerland used the high mountain pasture called Vermunt. They would drive their cattle over the Vermuntpass to graze there. This was especially true during the Middle Ages when the climate was warmer.
Rule by Different Powers
The Habsburg family ruled the areas in Vorarlberg for a long time. They would sometimes govern from Tyrol and sometimes from a region called Vorderösterreich. From 1805 to 1814, Gaschurn-Partenen was part of Bavaria. After that, it became part of Austria again. Since 1861, when the state of Vorarlberg was created, Gaschurn has been a part of it.
Rise of Tourism
In the mid-1800s, people started visiting Gaschurn-Partenen for summer vacations. This led to the start of tourism in the area. In 1885, a group was formed to help improve the town for visitors.
Many Alpine Club huts were built in the mountains for hikers and climbers. The Madlenerhaus opened in 1885, followed by the Wiesbadener Hütte in 1896, the Tübinger Hütte in 1908, the Saarbrücker Hütte in 1910, and the Heilbronner Hütte in 1927. Around 1910, work also began on building a road from Schruns to Partenen, making it easier for people to reach the area.
Community Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for Gaschurn-Partenen was designed in 1966 by an artist named Konrad Honold. It features a water wheel and a halberd, which is a type of old weapon. The halberd represents a local legend about a hero and helper named Lukas Tschofen. Next to these, you can see crossed papal keys.
Culture and Traditions
In 1992, the Tourism Museum Gaschurn opened its doors. It was the very first museum in Austria dedicated to tourism. It teaches visitors about the history of travel and vacations in the region.
The village's new community center, finished in 1986, has a special room called the Lukas Tschofen-Stube. This room is a 300-year-old traditional "Montafoner Stube," which is a type of old, cozy living room from the Montafon valley.
The main church in Gaschurn is the parish church. It's a neo-Romanesque style church, which means it looks like old Roman buildings. It was opened in 1869 by Bishop Franz Josef Rudigier, who was born in Partenen. The beautiful paintings on the altar and ceiling were created by two brothers, Franz and Jakob Bertle.
The Maria Schnee Chapel is another important building. An inscription says it was built in 1637. Lukas Tschofen, the same person mentioned in the coat of arms legend, was its founder. The chapel is on a small hill in the middle of the village. It has a special picture of Maria Hilf, which is a copy of a famous painting. Many people visit this chapel as a pilgrimage site.
