Andrinúa was born in Bilbao, a city in Spain. He played most of his football career for Athletic Bilbao. For a short time, he also played on loan for Real Valladolid.
Starting at Athletic Bilbao
He first played for Athletic Bilbao's main team in the 1983–84 season. This was a special year because Athletic Bilbao won the La Liga championship. Andrinúa played one game that season.
Becoming a Team Captain
Over time, Andrinúa became a very important player. He took over as the team captain from another great defender, Andoni Goikoetxea. Andrinúa played 356 games for the club from the Basque region. He scored goals in almost every season he played.
Retirement from Club Football
After many successful years, he stopped playing football in June 1997. He was 33 years old. When he retired, a younger player named Julen Guerrero became the new captain of Athletic Bilbao.

His first game for Spain was a friendly match against England on February 18, 1987. He came into the game as a substitute. Spain lost that game 4–2, with all four of England's goals scored by Gary Lineker.
