Genar Andrinúa Cortabarría (born on May 9, 1964) is a Spanish former professional football player. He was a strong central defender. He played for many years for Athletic Bilbao.
Playing for Clubs
Genar Andrinúa was born in Bilbao, Biscay, a city in Spain. He spent almost his entire career playing for Athletic Bilbao. He also played for Real Valladolid for a short time on loan. A loan means he played for another team temporarily.
He joined Athletic Bilbao's main team in the 1983–84 season. That year, Athletic Bilbao won the La Liga championship. Genar played one game for them that season.
Over time, Genar became the captain of Athletic Bilbao. He took over from an experienced player named Andoni Goikoetxea. Genar played a total of 356 games for the Basque club. He scored goals in almost every season he played. He retired from football in June 1997 when he was 33 years old. After he left, a younger player, Julen Guerrero, became the new captain.
Playing for His Country
Genar Andrinúa also played for the Spanish national team. He played in 28 games, which are called "caps," and scored two goals. His first game for Spain was a friendly match against England. This game happened on February 18, 1987. He came into the game as a substitute.
He was part of the Spanish team for two big tournaments. These were the UEFA Euro 1988 and the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He stopped playing for the national team after the 1990 World Cup.
Genar also played two games for the unofficial Basque Country team. He helped the Spain under-21 team win a major competition. They won the 1986 European Championship.
