A Station for the Factory
This station first opened its doors on November 18, 1956. Its main job was to help workers get to and from the General Motors factory. This factory made cars and was a very important place for jobs in the area.
Station Features
The General Motors station had two platforms. These are the raised areas where people wait for trains. It also had a special footbridge. This bridge allowed factory workers to walk directly from the station into the factory safely.
Why the Station Closed
In 1991, the big General Motors factory closed down. This meant that the main reason for the station to exist was gone. Even though the factory was no longer there, the station stayed open for another eleven years.
The Quietest Station
After the factory closed, very few people used the General Motors station. It was thought to be the least used train station in all of Melbourne! On average, only about eight passengers used it each day. Imagine how quiet that must have been!
Final Stop
The last trains stopped at the General Motors station on July 28, 2002. After that day, the station was officially closed. Trains still pass by on the Pakenham line, but they no longer stop here.
