History of Genesee Township
The area now known as Genesee Township was once home to Native Americans. They had a burial ground in the northwest part of what is now section 11. This burial ground was discovered when a railroad was built through the area.
Early Settlements and Mills
In 1833, the first settlers, Luman Beach and Addison Stewart, arrived in the Geneseeville area. In 1835, Sherman Stanley started a settlement at the corners of what are now Bray and Stanley Roads. Many other families from Mount Morris, New York, joined him by 1838.
Mills were very important for early settlements. A lumber mill was built in 1834 on Kearsley Creek. Two more mills were built on Kearsley Creek in 1836 and 1837. In Geneseeville, a fourth mill was built on the Flint River in 1847. These mills helped the community grow by processing wood and grain.
Township Formation
Genesee Township was officially organized on April 2, 1838. The first meeting was held in the Cold Water settlement. At first, Genesee Township included the eastern half of what would later become Mount Morris Township.
Over time, the township's boundaries changed. In 1955, the western part of Genesee Township was separated to form Mount Morris Township.

On November 27, 2017, Genesee Township and other nearby communities began receiving water from the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline. This water is treated by the Genesee County Drain Commission.
