George Augustus Armes (born May 29, 1844 – died December 18, 1919) was an United States Army officer. He worked for General Winfield Scott Hancock and took part in the Battle of the Saline River.

George Augustus Armes' Life

George Augustus Armes was born in Fairfax, Virginia, on May 29, 1844. His parents were Josiah Orcutt Armes and Caroline Olive Older.

Early Life and Military Service

During the American Civil War, George Armes fought for the Union Army. He was involved in the Battle of the Saline River on August 2, 1867. This battle was part of the American Indian Wars.

On October 14, 1874, he married Lucy Hamilton Kerr. She was the daughter of John Bozman Kerr. George and Lucy had eight children together. One of their children was the well-known writer, Ethel Armes.

A Career in Real Estate

Later in his life, George Armes became a real estate broker. He bought land in 1890 that would later become a neighborhood called Armesleigh Park. This area is in Tenleytown, a part of Washington, D.C. He sold this land in 1892.

In 1890, Armes also worked with the Chevy Chase Land Company. This company was connected to Francis G. Newlands and a group of bankers and politicians from San Francisco, sometimes called the "California Syndicate." A newspaper article from March 1, 1890, in the Washington Evening Star talked about a "Big Real Estate Deal." It said that George A. Armes helped the California Syndicate buy a lot of land, about 958 acres. This huge purchase cost over a million and a half dollars.

In 1900, George Armes wrote a book about his experiences called Ups & Downs of an Army Officer. He married Marie Atkinson on December 24, 1910, in Philadelphia.

George Augustus Armes passed away on December 18, 1919, in Ventnor City, New Jersey.
