George Beesley (also known as Bisley) was born around 1562 in Goosnargh, Lancashire, England. He came from a Roman Catholic family. He became an English Catholic priest and later died on July 2, 1591. He is remembered as a Catholic martyr, which means he died for his religious beliefs. In 1987, he was declared "Blessed" by the Catholic Church.
His Life and Faith
George Beesley became a priest at the English College in Rheims, France, on March 14, 1587. On November 1, 1588, he bravely returned to England. At this time, Queen Elizabeth I was ruling, and Catholics faced difficult times. George Beesley wanted to help and support Catholics during these challenges.
In 1590, he was caught and put in prison. His "crime" was simply being a Roman Catholic priest. While in prison, he was questioned very harshly. His captors tried to make him reveal the names of other Catholics. Even though he was treated badly and his body was hurt, he never told them anything.
George Beesley was executed in Fleet Street, London. This happened because of a law from that time, the Jesuits, etc. Act 1584 . His feast day, a special day to remember him, is celebrated every year on July 1.
