George Chandler (born June 30, 1898 – died June 10, 1985) was an American actor. He appeared in more than 140 movies. He often played smaller, supporting characters. Many people remember him as Uncle Petrie Martin on the TV show Lassie. He was also known for his role in a funny short film called The Fatal Glass of Beer (1933).

Early Life and Beginnings
George Chandler was born in Waukegan, Illinois, on June 30, 1898. When he was a baby, his family moved to Hinsdale, Illinois. Before becoming a movie star, he performed in vaudeville shows. His act was called "George Chandler, the Musical Nut." It combined comedy with his violin playing. He started acting in films in 1929.
Acting Career in Movies
George Chandler had a very ordinary face. This helped him play many different small roles in movies. He often played everyday people. These included bartenders, shopkeepers, and taxi drivers. He also played reporters, photographers, and farmers. He usually had only a few lines to say.
One of his most famous early roles was in the comedy The Fatal Glass of Beer (1933). In this silly movie, he played Chester, the son of W. C. Fields. Chester was a young man who got into trouble after drinking beer.
Chandler also appeared in Footlight Parade (1933). He played a druggist who sells aspirin. In Hellzapoppin', he was a cameraman. He even had a bigger role in the mystery film The Shanghai Cobra (1945). There, he ran an all-night coffee shop where a murder happened.
Television Appearances
Like many actors from movies, George Chandler found lots of work in television. He appeared in many popular TV shows. He was on The Adventures of Kit Carson six times. He also guest-starred on The Public Defender.

In 1958, Chandler appeared in two episodes of Wagon Train. He also had roles in Bringing Up Buddy and the western series Bonanza. In 1970, he was in The Men From Shiloh.
His Own TV Show
In 1956, George Chandler played a wise character named Ichabod Adams. This was for an episode of Robert Montgomery Presents. He played Ichabod again in 1957. Then, in 1960, he brought the character back for an episode of General Electric Theater.
This character became so popular that it led to a whole TV series. The show was called Ichabod and Me (1961-62). This was a big moment for Chandler. It was his first time having a starring role in his own show. He worked alongside Robert Sterling and Christine White on the series.
Leading the Screen Actors Guild
In 1960, George Chandler was chosen for an important job. He became the president of the Screen Actors Guild. This is a group that represents actors. He served in this role for three years.
Later Years and Passing
George Chandler passed away in Panorama City, California, on June 10, 1985. He was 86 years old. He died from cancer, just a few weeks before his 87th birthday.
