George Henry Dockrell, born on July 22, 1992, is a talented Irish cricket player. He represents the Irish national team in international matches. George is known as an "all-rounder" in cricket. This means he is good at both batting (hitting the ball) and bowling (throwing the ball to get players out). He learned to play cricket at the Leinster Cricket Club in Dublin.

In recent years, Cricket Ireland has given him a special contract. This means he is a full-time professional player.

Starting Young in Cricket

George Dockrell started playing cricket at a very young age. He played for Ireland's teams from under-13s and up.

Youth World Cup Success

In 2009, George was part of the team that won the 2010 U-19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. This win allowed Ireland to play in the 2010 U-19 Cricket World Cup. George made his first Youth One Day International (ODI) appearance there. It was against the South Africa U-19s. He played three more Youth ODIs in that tournament.

George also played for Ireland A, which is a step below the main national team, starting in 2008. The same year, he was invited to train with Somerset County Cricket Club in England.

Playing for Cricket Clubs

Somerset County Cricket Club showed interest in George when he was just 15. In July 2010, Somerset offered him a two-year contract. George was excited to improve his game and join a county team.

Early Days at Somerset

His commitments to Ireland's international games sometimes limited his time with Somerset. In 2010, he dislocated his shoulder, which meant he missed a lot of his first season. However, he still played in some important matches. These included a semi-final in the Twenty20 Cup.

In 2012, George had a great start to the season with Somerset. He took 6 wickets for only 27 runs in a match against Middlesex. This helped his team win. He left Somerset at the end of the 2015 season.

Top Performer in Ireland

In 2018, George was the best player in the 2018 Inter-Provincial Cup. He scored 231 runs and took ten wickets. Because of his excellent performance, he was named the Men's Inter-Provincial Player of the Year. This award was given at the annual Cricket Ireland Awards.

In 2021, George scored his first century (100 runs) in a List A cricket match. He scored 100 not out against Northern Knights.

In July 2024, George signed a short-term contract with Lancashire. He played for them in white-ball cricket.

International Cricket Career

George Dockrell made his debut for the senior Ireland team in 2010. This was during the 2010 Quadrangular Twenty20 Series in Sri Lanka.

First International Matches

His first Twenty20 International (T20I) match was against Afghanistan. He took 2 wickets for only 11 runs, helping Ireland win. He also played against Sri Lanka A, taking one wicket.

George was chosen for the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 tournament. He was the youngest player there. He took four wickets against the West Indies team. He also bowled very well against England. George said that taking wickets against the West Indies gave him a lot of confidence.

He missed an ODI match against Australia in June 2010. This was because he had to take a Biology exam for his Irish Leaving Certificate.

World Cups and Test Debut

In May 2011, George was part of Ireland's team for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. In August 2012, he was named captain for the 2012 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Australia.

In March 2019, George made his Test debut for Ireland. This was against Afghanistan in India. He was also part of Ireland's squad for the 2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier in the United Arab Emirates.

In July 2020, George was named in Ireland's squad to train for an ODI series against England. This training was done behind closed doors.

In September 2021, George was included in Ireland's team for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He also played in Test matches for Ireland in March and April 2023. These matches were against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. He was also part of the T20I and ODI teams for those tours.

In May 2024, George was selected for Ireland’s team for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament.
