A Hero of the Civil War

Early Life and Joining the Army

George Doré was born on June 24, 1845, on the Isle of Wight in England. When he was a teenager, he moved to the United States.

When the American Civil War began, George Doré decided to join the army. He signed up for the 126th New York Volunteer Infantry regiment on August 22, 1862. He joined from a town called West Bloomfield, New York.

Soon after joining, his unit was involved in the Battle of Harpers Ferry. During this battle, George was captured by the enemy. However, he was released just one day later. This was called being "paroled," which meant he promised not to fight again for a short time.

Bravery at Gettysburg

George Doré showed incredible bravery during one of the most important battles of the Civil War. This was the Battle of Gettysburg, which took place in Pennsylvania in July 1863.

On July 3, 1863, George performed an act of great courage. For this brave action, he was later awarded the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award a soldier can receive for bravery in combat. He officially received this special award on December 1, 1864.

After his heroic actions, George Doré was promoted. In December 1863, he became a corporal. Then, in June 1864, he was promoted again to sergeant.

Other Heroes and Later Life

George Doré was not the only hero from his regiment at Gettysburg. Two other soldiers from the 126th New York Infantry also won the Medal of Honor for their actions there. Their names were Morris Brown, Jr. and Jerry Wall.

George Doré finished his service in the army on June 3, 1865. This is when his regiment was "mustered out," meaning they were officially discharged from military service.

George Doré lived many more years after the war. He passed away on February 8, 1927. His final resting place is at the Rural Cemetery in New York.
