George London's Partnership
George London worked closely with Henry Wise. Henry Wise (1653–1738) was first George London's apprentice. An apprentice learns a skill by working with an expert. Later, they became business partners.
Designing Grand Gardens
Together, London and Wise created many beautiful gardens. They specialized in "parterre" gardens. These are flat garden beds with paths that form patterns. They often used low hedges and colored gravel to make designs.
Some of their most famous projects include:
- Hampton Court (where they designed the famous Hampton Court Maze)
- Chelsea Hospital
- Longleat
- Chatsworth
- Melbourne Hall
- Wimpole Hall
- Castle Howard
Hanbury Hall Gardens
One special project was the gardens at Hanbury Hall near Bromsgrove. These gardens have been brought back to life. People used old plans, surveys, and archaeological clues to rebuild them. This shows how important George London's original designs were.
His Life and Legacy
We don't know George London's exact birth date, but it was probably around 1640. He was the gardener for Henry Compton at Fulham Palace in Fulham. George London is buried with his wife Elizabeth at All Saints Church, Fulham. His grave is marked by a black stone slab inside the church.
