George Watson Pratt was an important person from New York. He was a politician and a brave officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He lived from 1830 to 1862.

The Life of George Watson Pratt

His Early Years

George Watson Pratt was born on April 18, 1830. His father was Zadock Pratt, who was a Congressman. George was born in a place called Windham, New York. This area later became the town of Prattsville. It is in Greene County, New York.

In 1855, George married Anna Attwood Tibbits. They had three children together. Later, he moved to Kingston, New York. There, he worked in making leather. He also worked in this business in New York City.

Serving His State and Country

George Watson Pratt was involved in public service. From 1853 to 1854, he was the Quartermaster General for the State Militia. This role meant he was in charge of supplies for the state's military forces.

He also served in the New York State Senate. He was a state senator in 1858 and 1859. In 1860, he wrote a book. It was about a British expedition during the American Revolutionary War. The book was titled An Account of the British Expedition Above the Highlands of the Hudson River; And of the Events Connected with the Burning of Kingston in 1777.

A Hero in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began, George Watson Pratt became a colonel. He led a group called the 20th New York State Militia Regiment, also known as the "Ulster Guards." He fought with his regiment in many battles.

During the Second Battle of Bull Run, he was badly wounded. He was shot in his left shoulder and spine. About two weeks later, he passed away from his injuries in Albany, New York. He was buried at Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, New York.
