George Warhop's Coaching Journey
Starting Out: College and Early Pro Teams
George Warhop began his coaching career in college football. On January 11, 1986, he became the offensive line coach for the Kansas Jayhawks. Later, on February 21, 1989, he moved to Vanderbilt as their offensive line coach.
After coaching at Vanderbilt in 1989, Warhop took a new job. He became the offensive line coach for the New Mexico Lobos on December 17, 1989. In 1990, he left New Mexico. He then became the offensive coordinator for the London Monarchs. This team was part of the World League of American Football.
Warhop coached the Monarchs for two seasons. After that, he was hired by Southern Methodist on February 17, 1993. He worked there as the offensive line coach. In the summer of 1994, he gained experience with an NFL team. He was a special intern for the Denver Broncos. From 1994 to 1995, Warhop coached the offensive line for Boston College.
Coaching in the NFL: St. Louis Rams
On February 8, 1996, George Warhop joined the St. Louis Rams. He was hired as their co-offensive line coach. In the 1997 NFL draft, the Rams picked Orlando Pace. Pace was a talented offensive tackle. He was the very first player chosen in the draft.
Pace missed some training camp time because he wanted a better contract. Warhop was upset by this. He felt Pace "lost a good part of the year" for learning. To help Pace catch up, Warhop worked as his special tutor. He helped Pace learn the team's plays and strategies quickly.
Coaching the Arizona Cardinals
On February 10, 1998, Warhop became the offensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals. He worked with the Cardinals until the end of the 2002 season. His contract ended, and he was not hired back by the team.
Working with the Dallas Cowboys
After his time with the Cardinals, Warhop joined the Dallas Cowboys. He was hired as their offensive line coach on January 16, 2003. The offensive line's job is to protect the quarterback. They also help clear the way for running backs.
In 2003 and 2004, the Cowboys' offensive line performed very well. They only allowed opponents to sack their quarterback 37 times. This was a big improvement from 2002. In 2002, before Warhop arrived, the team gave up 54 sacks. After two seasons, Warhop was let go by the Cowboys on January 7, 2005. He later interviewed for a college coaching job but did not get it.
Time with the San Francisco 49ers
On January 27, 2005, Warhop was hired by the San Francisco 49ers. He became their offensive line coach. In the 2006 season, his offensive line struggled. They allowed 55 sacks, which was the most in the league.
Because of this, the 49ers hired another offensive line coach, Chris Foerster. They shared the coaching duties. Warhop was let go during the season on October 23, 2008. At that point, his offensive line had given up 29 sacks, again the most in the league.
Coaching the Cleveland Browns
On February 4, 2009, George Warhop joined the Cleveland Browns. He worked as their offensive line coach.
With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
In 2014, Warhop was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was the offensive line coach under head coach Lovie Smith. When Dirk Koetter became the new head coach, Warhop stayed on the coaching staff.
Joining the Jacksonville Jaguars
On January 13, 2019, Warhop became the offensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He worked under head coach Doug Marrone. On January 19, 2021, when Urban Meyer became the new head coach, Warhop was kept on the team.
Coaching the Houston Texans
On February 21, 2022, Warhop was hired by the Houston Texans. He served as their offensive line coach for the 2022 season. He was not kept on the coaching staff for the 2023 season.
Current Role: Baltimore Ravens
On August 14, 2024, George Warhop took on a new role. He became the interim offensive line coach for the Baltimore Ravens. This happened after their coach, Joe D'Alessandris, was hospitalized. After D'Alessandris passed away on August 25, Warhop was officially named the offensive line coach for the rest of the season.
