George Washington Emery Dorsey (born January 25, 1842 – died June 12, 1911) was an important person in American politics. He served as a Representative for Nebraska in the United States Congress. This means he was elected by people in Nebraska to speak for them in the national government.

George Dorsey's Early Life
Growing Up in Virginia
George Dorsey was born in Loudoun County, Virginia, in 1842. When he was 14 years old, his family moved. They went to Preston County, which is now part of West Virginia. George went to private schools. He also studied at a place called Oak Hill Academy.
Serving in the Civil War
The American Civil War began when George was a young man. He helped gather a group of volunteers to join the Union Army. In August 1861, he became a first lieutenant. This is an officer rank in the army. He served in the 6th Regiment West Virginia Infantry.
George was a brave soldier. He was promoted to captain and then to major. These promotions were for his excellent service during the war. He finished his time in the army in August 1865. This was with the Union Army of the Shenandoah.
A Career in Nebraska Politics
Moving West and Studying Law
After the Civil War, George Dorsey moved to Nebraska in 1866. He decided to study law. By 1869, he was allowed to practice law. This means he could work as a lawyer. He also got involved in banking. He was the vice president of the State board of agriculture. This board helped farmers in Nebraska.
Becoming a Congressman
George Dorsey was a member of the Republican Party. He became the leader of the Republican State central committee. This committee helps organize the party in the state.
He was elected to the United States Congress three times. He served from March 4, 1885, to March 3, 1891. During his time in Congress, he was the chairman of the Committee on Banking and Currency. This committee worked on laws about banks and money.
In 1890, George Dorsey tried to be reelected to Congress. However, he did not win that election.
Later Life and Business
After leaving Congress, George Dorsey worked in mining. He had businesses that dug for valuable minerals. These mining projects were in Nevada and Utah.
George Washington Emery Dorsey passed away on June 12, 1911. He died in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was buried in the City Cemetery in Fremont, Nebraska.
