His Life and Work
Georges-Emmanuel Clancier was born in Limoges, France, on May 3, 1914. He started writing poems when he was young. In 1933, he began working for different journals, like Les Cahiers du Sud.
He moved to Paris in 1939. But in 1940, he went back to Limousin. There, he studied at universities in Poitiers and Toulouse. He also met other writers, like Joe Bousquet.
Helping the Resistance
During World War II, from 1942 to 1944, Clancier played a secret role. He collected writings from authors who were part of the French Resistance. He then secretly sent these texts to Algiers, away from occupied France. This helped share important messages during a difficult time.
After the War
After France was freed, Clancier worked at Radio-Limoges. He was in charge of programs there. He also became a journalist for the newspaper Populaire du Centre. He wrote many articles and talked on the radio about the artist Maurice Boitel.
Clancier also helped start a magazine called Centres. He worked with Robert Margerit and René Rougerie
on this project. He also put together collections of poems and writings for a publishing house.Working in Paris
From 1955 to 1970, Clancier worked in Paris. He was a secretary for the programming committees of French radio and television (Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française).
In 1956, he published his novel series called Le Pain noir (The Black Bread). In these books, he told the story of his own family. He wrote about his maternal grandmother, who was an illiterate shepherd. Le Pain noir was later made into a television show in 1974.
Later Years and Leadership
Clancier was a leader in several important organizations. From 1976 to 1979, he was the President of PEN France. This group helps protect writers who are in danger, jailed, or forced to leave their homes.
In 1980, he became Vice-President of the French Commission for UNESCO. Later, in 1987, he was Vice-President of International PEN. He also chaired the House of Writers from 1986 to 1990.
Georges-Emmanuel Clancier lived a very long life. He turned 100 years old on May 3, 2014. He passed away on July 4, 2018, at the age of 104.
