A Look at Georgetown's Past

Georgetown might be the oldest neighborhood in Seattle. The first people settled here on September 27, 1851. They were Luther Collins, Henry Van Asselt, and the Maple family. They came to farm the rich land near the Duwamish River.

  • Early Settlers

The Collins family built homes and started a successful farm within a year. Another group, the Denny Party, arrived two days earlier but struggled. They later moved to what is now downtown Seattle. The Collins farm was located near where the First Avenue Bridge is today.

  • How Georgetown Got Its Name

In 1890, Julius Horton named the area "Georgetown" after his son.

  • The Famous Brewery

The original Rainier Brewery, which was once one of the biggest breweries in the world, started in Georgetown in 1882. Today, the old red brick brewery building is called the Georgetown Brewhouse. It's now home to artists and small businesses. You can see it along Airport Way S.

  • Becoming a City

Georgetown became its own city in 1904. This happened partly because people wanted to protect their local businesses, like saloons and breweries, from laws that might try to stop them.

  • Joining Seattle

Georgetown was an independent city from 1904 to 1910. Then, it joined Seattle. The Old Georgetown City Hall (built in 1909) and the Georgetown Steam Plant (built in 1906) are now special historical places. People started talking about joining Seattle in 1906, but it wasn't until 1909 that many people supported it. A special election was held on March 29, 1910. Most people voted to join Seattle, and Georgetown officially became part of Seattle on April 4, 1910.

Since the 1990s, Georgetown has become a really cool and artistic place. In 2001, there were places like Industrial Coffee and Stellar Pizza that hosted live music.

  • New Businesses and Art

Many new coffee shops and bars have opened. You can also find a record store, a beer store, and even a circus school called SANCA! There's also a bakery, a scooter shop, and art galleries.

  • Unique Style

A writer from the Seattle Weekly described Georgetown's style. She said that businesses use the old, open brick spaces from factories. They add local art and cool old items to create warm and inviting places. Just walking around, you can see a unique, artistic, and industrial style. Recently, new apartments have also been built in the neighborhood.
