Georgia Bright Engel (born July 28, 1948 – died April 12, 2019) was an American actress. She was famous for her roles in popular TV shows. Georgia played Georgette Franklin Baxter in The Mary Tyler Moore Show from 1972 to 1977. She also played Pat MacDougal on Everybody Loves Raymond from 2003 to 2005. During her acting career, Engel was nominated for five Primetime Emmy Awards.

Early Life and Education
Georgia Engel was born in Washington, D.C.. Her mother was Ruth Caroline, and her father was Benjamin Franklin Engel. Her father was an admiral in the United States Coast Guard.
Georgia went to school in Kodiak Island, Alaska. She also attended Walter Johnson High School. She studied at the Academy of the Washington Ballet. Later, she earned her theater degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Acting Career Highlights
After college, Georgia Engel started her acting career. She performed in musical shows in Washington. In 1969, she moved to New York City. She appeared in an Off-Broadway show called Lend an Ear. For about a year, she played Minnie Fay in the Broadway musical Hello, Dolly!.
Becoming a TV Star
In 1971, Georgia performed in a play called The House of Blue Leaves. This play moved to Los Angeles. There, Mary Tyler Moore and her husband, Grant Tinker, saw her. They soon hired her for their TV show.
Engel joined The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1972. She played Georgette Franklin Baxter. This role made her very popular. She stayed on the show until it ended in 1977. Her performance earned her two Emmy nominations.
After The Mary Tyler Moore Show, she worked with Betty White. They starred together in The Betty White Show in 1977–78. Georgia also appeared in other TV shows in the 1980s. These included Goodtime Girls and Jennifer Slept Here.
Later TV and Film Roles
Georgia had a recurring role on the TV show Coach. She also lent her voice to animated movies. She was the voice of Love-a-Lot Bear in The Care Bears Movie (1985).
From 2003 to 2005, she had a popular role on Everybody Loves Raymond. She played Pat MacDougall, who was Robert Barone's mother-in-law. This role earned her three more Emmy nominations. She also appeared in two episodes of the show Neighbours.
Engel made her first movie appearance in Taking Off (1971). For this role, she was nominated for a British Academy Award. She also appeared in other films like The Sweetest Thing (2002). Her distinctive voice was also heard in animated films like Open Season (2006) and Dr. Dolittle 2 (2001).
Return to Stage Acting
In 2006, Georgia Engel returned to her theater roots. She performed on Broadway in the musical The Drowsy Chaperone. She played the role of Mrs. Tottendale. She continued this role on a North American tour.
She also performed in various shows at The Muny Theater in St. Louis, Missouri. In 2010, she was in Show Boat. In 2005, she appeared in Mame. She also performed in Oklahoma! in 2007 and The Music Man in 2009.
In 2012, she appeared in episodes of The Office. She played Irene, an older lady. She also reunited with Betty White on the show Hot in Cleveland. Georgia played Mamie Sue Johnson, who was Betty White's character's best friend.
In 2015, Engel starred in the play John Off-Broadway. She won an Obie Award for Distinguished Performance by an Actress for her role. She was also nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award. Later, she starred in the musical Gotta Dance, which was later renamed Half Time.
Personal Life and Passing
Georgia Engel followed the beliefs of Christian Science. She passed away on April 12, 2019, in Princeton, New Jersey. She was 70 years old. A friend mentioned that the cause of her passing was not known. This was because she did not visit doctors due to her religious beliefs.
She is survived by her two sisters, Robin Engel and Penny Lusk. Robin Engel was once crowned Miss Hawaii in 1967.
