Geraldo João Martins is a politician and expert in economics from Guinea-Bissau. He served as the Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau in 2023. He is also the vice president of a political group called the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde. Before becoming prime minister, he worked at the World Bank. He also held important roles as the Minister of Education and the Minister of Economy and Finance.

Geraldo Martins' Early Life and School
Geraldo Martins studied chemistry and physics in a school in Moldova. He later earned a law degree from the Faculty of Law of Bissau. He also completed a master's degree at the University of London. His master's studies focused on management and public policy.
Geraldo Martins' Career and Public Service
Geraldo Martins has held several important positions in his career. From 2001 to 2003, he served as the Minister of Education. This role meant he was in charge of the country's schools and learning programs.
Working at the World Bank
From 2005 to 2014, Martins worked for the World Bank. The World Bank is a big organization that helps countries around the world. It provides money and advice to help nations develop and improve their economies.
Roles in Government
Martins was also the Minister of Economy and Finance. He held this position in the government led by Prime Minister Domingos Simões Pereira. In this role, he managed the country's money and financial plans.
Becoming Prime Minister
Geraldo Martins is the vice-president of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC). This political party was part of a group that won many seats in the National People's Assembly. This happened during the 2023 election.
On August 8, 2023, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló chose Martins to be the prime minister. His team of ministers, called a cabinet, had nineteen members. Eight of these ministers were women.
Changes in Government
The National People's Assembly was closed down on December 4, 2023. However, Martins was appointed prime minister again on December 12. President Embaló also took on the roles of Minister of the Interior and Defence in Martins' new cabinet.
On December 21, 2023, President Embaló removed Martins from his position as prime minister. He was replaced by Rui Duarte de Barros. The president stated that this change happened after an attempt to take over the government.
