Rui Duarte de Barros has been the Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau since January 17, 2024. Before this, he was the Minister of Economy and Finance. He also served as a temporary prime minister from May 16, 2012, to July 3, 2014. This happened after a military group took control of the government.

Early Government Roles
From 2001 to 2003, he worked in the government's money department. He was first the Secretary of State for the Treasury. After that, he became the Minister of Finance. This role means he was in charge of the country's money.
In 2003, he took on a new job. He became Guinea-Bissau's representative for the West African Economic and Monetary Union. This is a group of countries that work together on money and trade. He held this position until 2011.
Serving as Transitional Prime Minister
In April 2012, there was a big change in Guinea-Bissau's government. A military group took control. After this, the military leaders and 36 political parties made an agreement. The main ruling party at the time, PAIGC, was not part of this agreement.
Because of this agreement, Rui Duarte de Barros was chosen as the temporary prime minister. He started this role on May 16, 2012. At that time, he was a member of the Party for Social Renewal. The previous prime minister, Carlos Gomes Júnior, did not agree with this choice. He said he did not recognize the new government. The next prime minister was chosen in the country's elections in 2014.
Return to Prime Minister Role
In December 2023, the President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, closed down the parliament. This happened because of a reported attempt to take over the government.
The President then appointed Geraldo Martins as prime minister again. Martins was asked to form a new government. He had been prime minister since June 2023. However, on December 20, President Sissoco Embaló removed Martins from his role. He then appointed Rui Duarte de Barros as the new prime minister. At that time, Duarte de Barros was leading the Administrative Council of the National People's Assembly. He was also a member of parliament for the PAIGC party.

As of 2012, Rui Duarte de Barros was married. He also had two children.
