Rui Duarte de Barros was born in 1959 or 1960. He is a politician and an expert in economics from Guinea-Bissau, a country in West Africa. He has been the Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau since January 17, 2024.
Before this, he held important jobs like being the Minister of Economy and Finance. He also served as a temporary Prime Minister from 2012 to 2014. This happened after a big change in the government.

His Journey in Politics
Rui Duarte de Barros studied to become an engineer in Havana, Cuba. He used his skills in government work.
Early Roles
From 2001 to 2003, he was in charge of the country's money as the Secretary of State for the Treasury. Later, he became the Minister of Finance. In 2003, he started working for the West African Economic and Monetary Union. He stayed in this important role until 2011.
Becoming Transitional Prime Minister
In April 2012, there was a big change in the government. After this, many political groups agreed to work together. Rui Duarte de Barros was then chosen as the temporary Prime Minister on May 16, 2012. He was a member of the Party for Social Renewal. The previous Prime Minister did not agree with this choice. A new Prime Minister was chosen after the elections in 2014.
Recent Events and New Role
In December 2023, the President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, made changes to the parliament. He then asked Geraldo Martins to be Prime Minister again. Martins had been Prime Minister since June 2023.
However, on December 20, the President chose Rui Duarte de Barros to be the Prime Minister instead. At that time, Duarte de Barros was leading the Administrative Council of the National People's Assembly. He was also a member of parliament for the PAIGC party.
