Lieutenant-Colonel Gerard Evelyn Leachman (born July 27, 1880, in Petersfield, England – died August 12, 1920, in Iraq) was a British soldier and intelligence officer. He was known for his many travels across Arabia and his important work in the Middle East. He often disguised himself as a local to learn more about the region.

Leachman's Adventures and Work

Gerard Leachman started his military career in 1900. He first served in South Africa during the Second Boer War. After that, he spent some time in India. Most of his career was spent as a political officer in Mesopotamia, which is now Iraq.

Helping to Bring Peace

As a political officer, Leachman played a key role in helping different tribes get along. His work helped bring stability to the new country of Mesopotamia. He also made several trips further south into Arabia. During these trips, he met with Ibn Sa'ud, an important leader, on behalf of the British government. Leachman traveled as a naturalist for the Royal Geographical Society. However, his real job was to gather information for the British.

Traveling in Disguise

Leachman had dark features and was very good at riding camels. This made it easy for him to pretend to be a Bedouin, a nomadic Arab person. He often traveled in secret, blending in with the local people.

Early Expeditions

His first big trip into the Arabian Peninsula was in 1909. During this journey, he saw a fierce battle between the Anaiza and Shammar tribes. In 1910, he received the Macgregor Memorial medal for his exploration work. In 1912, Leachman tried to cross the Rub Al Khali, a vast desert. But Ibn Sa'ud did not allow him to continue when he reached Riyadh. Instead, Leachman went to Hasa. He was the first British person to be welcomed by Ibn Sa'ud in his home city.

Saving the Cavalry

In December 1915, during the Siege of Kut, Leachman received a special order. The British commander, Major General Charles Townshend, told him to save the British cavalry. Leachman successfully led the cavalry to safety. They were the only British unit to escape before the city fell to the Ottomans.

Working with Tribes

Leachman became good friends with Fahad Bey Ibn Haddal, a chief of the Amarat Bedouins. He also fought alongside the Muntafiq Bedouin federation. The Bedouin people called him Njayman. Towards the end of World War I, Leachman worked with local tribes. He helped secure more land from the Ottoman Empire.

Leachman's Death

After the war, Leachman continued his work as a Political Officer in the Mosul area of Mesopotamia. He was killed on August 12, 1920, during an uprising. This happened near Fallujah in Iraq. He had met with a tribal leader named Dhari ibn Mahmoud to discuss loyalty to the government. After a disagreement, Leachman was shot by Dhari's son.

His death led to more tribal uprisings in the area. Leachman was buried in the British Military Cemetery in Baghdad. His story is still remembered in Bedouin oral traditions.

Leachman was played by actor Oliver Reed in a 1983 film called Al-Mas' Ala Al-Kubra.
