Gettysburg is a small city in South Dakota, United States. It is the main town in Potter County. In 2020, about 1,104 people lived there. It is located along the 45th parallel, which is halfway between the Equator and the North Pole.

History of Gettysburg

Gettysburg was officially planned out in 1884. The city was named after the famous Battle of Gettysburg. This was a very important battle during the American Civil War. Many of the first people who settled here were soldiers. They had fought for the Union Army in that war. For a while, Gettysburg was home to a special air force base. It was called Gettysburg Air Force Station, but it closed in 1968.

Geography and Climate

Gettysburg covers about 1.92 square miles (4.97 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the city limits.

Gettysburg's Climate

Gettysburg has a unique climate. It gets about 18 inches (465 mm) of rain each year. This amount of rain makes it a meeting point between two types of climates. To the west, the climate is very dry. To the east, it is more humid.

Gettysburg is considered to have a semi-arid cold climate. This means it is quite dry, but it also gets cold. The average high temperature is about 55.5°F (12.7°C). The average low temperature is about 33.1°F (-0.4°C). This means temperatures often drop below freezing for part of the year. The city gets about 38.7 inches (99 cm) of snow each year.

The wettest months are from May to July. During these months, Gettysburg gets between 2.8 and 3.5 inches (72 to 88 mm) of rain. January is the driest month, with only about 0.35 inches (9 mm) of rain. Snowfall is highest in February and December.
