Playing for Clubs: Giancarlo's Journey
Giancarlo De Sisti was often called Picchio. He played for his hometown club, A.S. Roma, two times. His first time was from 1960 to 1965. Later, he returned to Roma from 1974 to 1979.
In between, he played for ACF Fiorentina from 1965 to 1974. He won many important titles with both clubs. Giancarlo started his professional career in Italy's top league, Serie A, in 1961. This was with Roma, in a game against Udinese.
His most successful time was with Fiorentina. He helped them win the Serie A league title in 1969. This was only the second time Fiorentina had won the league. He also won the Coppa Italia (Italy's main cup competition) with both Roma in 1964 and Fiorentina in 1966.
Playing for Italy: International Matches

Giancarlo De Sisti also played for the Italy national football team. He played in 29 international games and scored 4 goals between 1967 and 1972. His first game for Italy was in November 1967. Italy won that game 5-0 against Cyprus.
He was part of the Italian team that won the UEFA European Championship in 1968. This big tournament was held in Italy. Giancarlo played in the final game against Yugoslavia, which Italy won 2-0. He was 25 years old at the time. Two years later, he also played in the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Italy finished as the runners-up in that tournament.
Coaching Teams: After Playing
After he stopped playing football, Giancarlo De Sisti became a coach. He got his coaching qualifications in 1980. Later that year, he became the head coach for his old club, Fiorentina. In 1982, his team almost won the league title, but they were just beaten by their rivals, Juventus.
He had to leave his coaching job in 1985 because he became ill. But he returned to football later that year with Udinese. He coached them for two seasons. After that, he worked for the Italian Football Federation. He coached Italy's youth teams and military teams. In 1991, he won a Military World Championship with the Italian Military team. He coached a club team again with Ascoli in 1991, but he left in January 1992.
In 2003, after not coaching for over ten years, De Sisti returned to the sport. He joined Lazio as a coach for their youth team. He stayed there for a few months before leaving.
How Giancarlo Played: His Style
Giancarlo De Sisti was a very smart and skilled midfielder. He is known as one of the best playmakers for Italy and Roma. He played in a simple but very effective way. He was always looking for open spaces on the field. He would make many short, accurate passes to keep the ball. He rarely touched the ball too many times. This helped his team keep possession and control the game.
He was also very calm when under pressure and played consistently well. He almost never made a wrong pass or lost the ball. Giancarlo had excellent vision, meaning he could see the whole field. He could also make long, accurate passes to create chances for his teammates to score goals.
Outside of Football: Other Work
On July 3, 1968, Giancarlo De Sisti helped start the Italian Footballers' Association (AIC) in Milan. He did this with other famous footballers like Giacomo Bulgarelli and Gianni Rivera. This association helps protect the rights of football players.
After his football career, De Sisti also worked as a football expert. He would share his opinions on TV and radio shows.
