History of Gibbon
Gibbon was started in 1871. A group of settlers, many of whom were veterans from the Civil War, founded the city. It was named after Major General John Gibbon, a famous military leader.

Gibbon was once the main town, or "county seat," for Buffalo County. However, in 1874, the people voted to make Kearney the new county seat instead.
