Gibbon is a small place in Umatilla County, Oregon, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it is part of the larger county.
Gibbon is about 20 miles (32 km) (32 km) east of Pendleton. It is located on the Umatilla Indian Reservation, close to the Umatilla River.
History of Gibbon
Gibbon started as a station along the Union Pacific railroad line. It was named after Major General John Gibbon. He was a military leader in charge of the Department of the Columbia in 1885–86.
Changing Names
When the railroad was first built, the station near Gibbon had a different name: Mikecha. This name was made up from parts of the names of three civil engineers: Mink, Kennedy, and Chalk.
Later, in the early 1900s, the station's name changed again to Bingham Springs. This was because it served the Bingham Springs resort, which was about 8 miles (13 km) (13 km) east along the Umatilla River.
However, the local post office kept the name Gibbon. The Gibbon post office operated from 1892 until 1966. Eventually, the railroad station's name was changed back to Gibbon. Today, people in Gibbon use an Adams mailing address for their mail.
Early School
By 1940, Gibbon had a school. This school welcomed both Native American children and other children from the community.
Climate
Gibbon has a type of weather called a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has warm and dry summers. The average monthly temperature does not go above 71.6 °F (22.0 °C) (22 °C). Scientists use the Köppen climate classification system to describe this type of climate as Csb.
