Early Life and Education
Gil Garcetti was born in Los Angeles, California. His father, Salvador Garcetti, came to the United States from Mexico as a child. His mother, Juanita Iberri, was born in Arizona.
In 1959, Gil Garcetti finished high school at George Washington High School. This school is now known as Washington Preparatory High School.
He went on to college and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California. Later, he received a law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Career as a Lawyer
Before becoming the top prosecutor for Los Angeles County, Gil Garcetti worked in the same office for more than 20 years. He started as a trial lawyer, which means he presented cases in court. He then moved into management roles. Eventually, he became the chief deputy for the previous District Attorney, Ira Reiner.
In 1992, Garcetti decided to run against his former boss, Ira Reiner, for the District Attorney position. Garcetti won the election with a large number of votes.
Leading the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office
When Gil Garcetti became District Attorney in 1992, Los Angeles County was still recovering from some major events. His first term was largely focused on a very famous criminal trial. This trial was long and expensive, and it ended in 1995. Even with this challenge, Garcetti was re-elected in 1996.
During his time as District Attorney, Garcetti worked on many important issues. These included helping victims of family violence and dealing with serious group-related issues. He also focused on stopping financial trickery and other problems in the community. Towards the end of his second term, there were some serious concerns about police actions in the city. These issues likely played a part in his losing the election in 2000.
In the 2000 election, Steve Cooley, another experienced lawyer from the District Attorney's office, challenged Garcetti. Cooley had supported Garcetti's opponent in the 1996 election. Garcetti lost this election to Steve Cooley.
Other Activities
Public Service
After leaving the District Attorney's office in 2000, Gil Garcetti continued to be involved in public service. In 2002, he was appointed to the Los Angeles city ethics commission. This group helps make sure that city officials act fairly and honestly.
He also spent time at Harvard University, studying politics. Garcetti has worked to create a foundation that helps students from diverse backgrounds finish high school. He has also supported efforts to change laws about serious punishments, arguing that the current system is too expensive and risky.
Photography
After his career as a prosecutor, Garcetti became a talented photographer. He created several collections of photos. Two of his collections focused on the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. One showed the workers building the hall, and the other showed the finished building.
His photos have been shown in museums, including the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. He also had an exhibition called Dance in Cuba: Photographs by Gil Garcetti. Another project, Water is Key: A Better Future for Africa, highlighted the importance of clean water in Africa.
