Gilbert Roland (born Luis Antonio Dámaso de Alonso) was a famous actor. He was born in Mexico on December 11, 1905. His acting career lasted for 70 years, from the 1920s to the 1980s! He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award twice. In 1960, he got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He passed away on May 15, 1994.

Gilbert Roland was born in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. He first wanted to be a bullfighter, just like his dad and grandpa.

When Pancho Villa took over their town, Gilbert and his family moved to the United States. He lived in Texas for a while. At age 14, he rode a train all the way to Hollywood.

In Hollywood, he found small jobs and slept in a church. He often lost his jobs because he spent time working as an extra in movies. He picked his stage name, Gilbert Roland, from his favorite actors: John Gilbert and Ruth Roland. He often played the role of a charming "Latin lover" in films.

His Acting Career

Gilbert Roland's first movie deal was with Paramount. His first big role was in the comedy The Plastic Age (1925). He starred alongside Clara Bow.

In 1926, he played Armand in Camille with Norma Talmadge. They also acted together in other movies. When movies started having sound, Gilbert often appeared in Spanish versions of American films. He usually played romantic lead characters.

In 1933, Gilbert had a big supporting role in She Done Him Wrong. He played one of Mae West's character's boyfriends.

Gilbert Roland served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

In the 1940s, people really started to notice his acting skills. He was praised for his roles in movies like We Were Strangers (1949) and The Bad and the Beautiful (1952). He also appeared in Thunder Bay (1953) and Cheyenne Autumn (1964).

He played the popular character "The Cisco Kid" in a series of films in the mid-1940s. In The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima, he played Hugo, a friend of the three shepherd children. In 1953, he played Mike Petrakis, a sponge diver, in Beneath the 12-Mile Reef.

Gilbert also acted on TV shows like Bewitched and December Bride. He even wrote a script for and acted in an episode of Wagon Train.

His last movie was the western Barbarosa in 1982.

Gilbert Roland married actress Constance Bennett on April 20, 1941. They had two daughters, Lorinda and Christina. Their marriage ended in 1946. He had acted with Constance Bennett in movies like Our Betters and After Tonight in 1933.

He married Guillermina Cantú in 1954. They stayed married for 40 years until his death.

Later Years and Awards

Gilbert Roland passed away from cancer in Beverly Hills, California, in 1994. He was 88 years old. His body was cremated, and his ashes were scattered at sea.

Gilbert was nominated for a Golden Globe Award twice. This was for his roles in The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and Cheyenne Autumn (1964). He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6730 Hollywood Boulevard for his work in movies.

In 1975, the city of El Paso, Texas, held "Gilbert Roland Days." They even created a scholarship fund in his name for newspaper carriers.
