Gilead (/ɡɪliəd/) is a quiet suburb located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It's a place with a rich history, known for its farming roots.

Where is Gilead?

Gilead is about 58 kilometres south-west of the main part of Sydney. It's part of the City of Campbelltown area. This region is also known as Macarthur.

Gilead's History

The name Gilead comes from a place mentioned in the Bible. That ancient land was famous for its wheat fields. This seemed like a great name for a wheat farm in Australia!

Early Farm Life

In 1812, a man named Reuban Uther was given 400 acres (about 1.6 square kilometres) of land here. He wanted to start a wheat farm. However, Uther only kept his dream going for six years. He then sold the large estate.

Mount Gilead Estate

In 1818, Thomas Rose bought the land. He changed its name to Mount Gilead. Rose lived and farmed on the estate until he passed away in 1837. His son, Henry Rose, inherited the estate. But in 1862, the family lost the property because they couldn't pay back a loan.

Modern Times

In 1941, the Macarthur-Onslow family bought the land. They also owned the nearby Camden Park Estate. This family still owns the land today. Even though people have talked about building houses here, Gilead mostly remains farmland. It sits just outside the busy suburban areas.

Important Historic Places

Gilead has a few sites that are listed as important heritage places. This means they are protected because of their historical value.
