Ginger Riley Munduwalawala (around 1936 – September 1, 2002) was an amazing Aboriginal Australian artist. He was born in the Limmen Bight area, near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast in Australia. His first language was Marra, which is now a language that very few people speak. Ginger Riley became an artist in the 1950s after meeting another famous artist, Albert Namatjira.

Riley was known for his special way of using bright colors. He painted the landscapes of the Gulf of Carpentaria. His art often showed mythological figures. These figures were believed to have created the land in his culture. His art mixed traditional Aboriginal styles with modern ideas. People even called him "the boss of colour."

Riley won many important awards for his art. He received the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 1987. In 1992, he won the Alice Prize from the Northern Territory. He also won the John McCaughey Memorial Art Prize in 1993. That same year, he received the first National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Art Award. He was also given an Australia Council Fellowship for 1997 and 1998.

His Art Exhibitions

The National Gallery of Victoria held a special exhibition of his work in 1997. This show looked back at ten years of his paintings. It was a very important event. It was the first time a public art gallery in Australia honored a living Aboriginal artist in this way. This showed how important Ginger Riley's art was to Australia and the world.
