Nationality Italian
Occupation Astronomer, microscopist, botanist

Giovanni Battista Amici (born March 25, 1786 – died April 10, 1863) was an important Italian scientist. He was an astronomer, which means he studied stars and planets. He was also a microscopist, someone who uses and improves microscopes. Plus, he was a botanist, studying plants.

Amici was born in Modena, a city in Italy. He studied at Bologna before becoming a professor of mathematics in Modena. In 1831, he became a top official for education in the Duchy of Modena. A few years later, he became the director of the observatory in Florence. An observatory is a place where scientists watch the sky. He also taught about natural history at a museum there. Amici died in Florence in 1863.

Improving Scientific Tools

Giovanni Battista Amici is best known for making scientific tools much better. He improved the mirrors used in reflecting telescopes. These telescopes use mirrors to gather light from far-away objects.

Making Microscopes Better

Amici also made big improvements to the way microscopes were built. Microscopes help us see tiny things that are too small for our eyes. His work made it possible to see more details in the tiny world around us.

His Discoveries

Amici was a very careful and skilled observer. He studied many different things:

  • He looked at double stars, which are two stars that appear close together.
  • He observed the moons of Jupiter.
  • He measured the size of the sun at its poles and its middle.
  • He also did biological studies. He looked at how sap moves in plants.
  • He studied how plants reproduce.
  • He was the first person to see the pollen tube. This is a tiny tube that grows from pollen to help plants make seeds.

Amici's Inventions

Amici invented a few special tools:

  • The dipleidoscope: This was a tool used to tell very accurate time.
  • The direct vision prism: This prism helps separate light into different colors without bending the light too much.

His Legacy

The Amici crater on the Moon is named after him. This shows how important his work was in science.
