Gisborne Airport (codes: GIS, NZGS) is a busy regional airport in Gisborne, on the East Coast of New Zealand's North Island. It's located in the Elgin area, about 4.2 kilometers from the city center.
This airport is special because it's one of the few in the world where a railway line crosses the main runway! The Palmerston North–Gisborne Line goes right over it. The airport covers about 160 hectares. It has one main terminal building with four gates where planes park.
Gisborne Airport has a main runway made of Asphalt. It's 1,310 meters long and can be used at night. There are also three grass runways for smaller planes. In 2018, plans were announced for a $5.5 million upgrade. This project will make the airport terminal show off the unique culture of the Gisborne area. It will also connect with the region's focus on navigation-themed tourism.
Who Manages Gisborne Airport?
The Gisborne District Council owns Gisborne Airport. They used to run it too. However, on December 16, 2004, the Council decided to let a company called Eastland Group manage the airport. Eastland Group started managing the airport and its facilities on April 1, 2005.
The agreement allows Eastland Group to manage the airport for 15 years. They also have an option to continue for another 15 years after that. Eastland Group pays the Council a yearly fee. This fee depends on how many passengers use the airport. Eastland Group is also responsible for all new investments and costs. This means that local taxpayers do not need to pay to support the airport. Since taking over, Eastland Group has added a new airport cafe called 'V2' and designed a new airport logo.
