Giulio Einaudi was a very important Italian book publisher. He was born on January 2, 1912, and passed away on April 5, 1999. The company he started in 1933, called Giulio Einaudi Editore, became famous across Europe. It was known for publishing excellent books, smart ideas, and important political thoughts. Many people considered it the most respected publishing house in Italy. Giulio Einaudi also wrote his own books about literature, history, philosophy, art, and science.
Giulio Einaudi's Early Life and Work
Giulio Einaudi was born in a town called Dogliani, in Italy. His father, Luigi Einaudi, later became the second president of Italy.
Giulio went to a special high school called Liceo Classico Massimo d'Azeglio. There, he was taught by Augusto Monti, who was against the fascist government. Fascism was a type of government that controlled everything and didn't allow much freedom.
On November 15, 1933, Giulio Einaudi started his own publishing company. It was located in Turin, in the same building where a famous thinker named Antonio Gramsci had published his newspaper, L'Ordine Nuovo.
Publishing Great Books and Ideas
During his career, Giulio Einaudi published many famous writers. These included Carlo Levi, Antonio Gramsci, Cesare Pavese, Natalia Ginzburg, Italo Calvino, Norberto Bobbio, and Primo Levi. He also published works by American politician Henry A. Wallace and Soviet leader Nikita S. Khrushchev.
One very important book he published was Dr. Zhivago by Boris Pasternak in 1957. This book was not allowed to be published in the Soviet Union at the time. Einaudi had also spoken against the creation of NATO, which is a group of countries that work together for defense. In 1964, he was one of the first people from the Western world to interview the Soviet leader Nikita S. Khrushchev. Later, Einaudi also published a book by Khrushchev. This book showed new, more peaceful ways the Soviet Union planned to deal with other countries after a difficult period.
In 1994, a very large company called Mondadori took over Einaudi's company. This company was controlled by Silvio Berlusconi, who was a former prime minister of Italy. After working for 64 years in publishing, Giulio Einaudi retired on September 4, 1997, when he was 85 years old. He passed away in Rome at the age of 87.

Giulio Einaudi was married to Renata Aldrovandi. They had three sons named Mario, Riccardo, and Ludovico, and one daughter named Giuliana. His son Ludovico is a well-known pianist and composer today.
