Early Life and Musical Start
Einaudi was born in Turin, Italy. His father, Giulio Einaudi, was a publisher who worked with famous writers. His grandfather, Luigi Einaudi, was the President of Italy from 1948 to 1955. Ludovico's mother, Renata Aldrovandi, played the piano for him when he was a child. Her father was also a musician.
Ludovico started writing music as a teenager. He first played a folk guitar. He then went to the Conservatorio Verdi in Milan to study music. He earned his diploma in composition in 1982. He also took a special class with Luciano Berio, a famous composer. Berio taught him to think openly about music. Einaudi also learned by working with musicians from other countries, like Ballaké Sissoko from Mali. His music is often calm and thoughtful, using simple melodies.
Music Career Highlights
After his studies, Einaudi spent several years writing traditional classical music. His music was performed in famous places like the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. In the mid-1980s, he started to create music for dance and multimedia shows. He also began writing more for the piano.
Music for Movies and TV
Einaudi started composing for films in the mid-1990s. He won an award called the Grolla d'oro for his music in the film Acquario (1996). In 2002, he won another Italian award for Best Film Score for Luce dei miei occhi. His music for the TV series Doctor Zhivago also received great reviews.
In 2010, Einaudi's music was used in the trailer for the movie Black Swan. His song "Nuvole Bianche" was featured in the film Insidious (2010). It was also in the British TV drama This Is England 86. For the French movie Intouchables (2011), he contributed several songs, including "Fly" and "Una Mattina."
Solo Albums and Performances

Einaudi released his first solo piano album, Le Onde, in 1996. This album was inspired by a book called The Waves by Virginia Woolf. It became very popular in Italy and the UK. His next album, Eden Roc (1999), featured shorter pieces. He worked with the Armenian musician Djivan Gasparyan on this project.
His 2001 album, I Giorni, was inspired by his travels in Africa. The main song, "I Giorni," became very popular after a DJ played it on BBC Radio 1. In 2004, Einaudi released Una Mattina. His 2006 album, Divenire, featured piano with an orchestra. The album included the popular song "Primavera." It was recorded with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. This album became a top classical album on iTunes.
In 2009, Einaudi released Nightbook. This album was different because it included electronic sounds along with his piano. It was inspired by a German artist named Anselm Kiefer. The album sold very well in Italy.
Einaudi's album In a Time Lapse came out in 2013. He toured to support this album. In 2016, a new piano concerto he wrote, called "Domino," was performed for the first time by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Musical Style
Einaudi's music is often described as calm and thoughtful. It uses simple melodies and is sometimes called "minimalist" or "new-age." This means it focuses on relaxation and a positive feeling. Some people say his music is less complex than traditional classical music. However, it is very popular and helps many people relax.
Other Activities
In 2016, Einaudi joined a Greenpeace campaign to help protect the Arctic region. He often uses his music to support important causes.
