Giuseppe Favalli's Club Career
Starting with Cremonese
Favalli began his professional career in 1988 with Cremonese. At that time, Cremonese was in Serie B, which is Italy's second-highest football league. The team was promoted to Serie A in 1989. Favalli played his first top-league game on August 27, 1989, in a match against Internazionale.
Playing for Lazio
Because of his great performances, Lazio signed Favalli in the summer of 1992. He became a very important player for the team. After Alessandro Nesta left in 2002, Favalli became the team's captain.
During his 12 years with Lazio, he won many important trophies. These included one Scudetto (the Italian league title), three Coppa Italia cups, and two Supercoppa Italiana titles. He also helped Lazio win the UEFA Super Cup. Favalli played 401 games for Lazio, scoring six goals, and became one of the players with the most appearances for the club.
Time at Inter Milan
On June 1, 2004, Favalli moved to Internazionale for free. With Inter, he continued his winning streak. He won the Coppa Italia twice more, in 2005 and 2006. This meant he won the Coppa Italia three years in a row!
He also won his second Scudetto with Inter in the 2005–06 season. This happened after the Calciopoli scandal, where Juventus lost their 2006 title, and it was given to Inter. Even though he won trophies, Favalli didn't always start games for Inter. His contract was not renewed after the 2006 season.
Joining AC Milan
After leaving Inter, Favalli joined Milan for free. He was brought in to replace his old Lazio teammate, Giuseppe Pancaro. At Milan, he often sat on the bench because other strong defenders like Kakha Kaladze and Paolo Maldini were ahead of him.
In the 2007 UEFA Champions League Final, he came on as a substitute. Milan won that match 2–1 against Liverpool, securing their seventh European Cup title. Milan fans even nicknamed him Favallinho after he scored two goals in a row in April 2007. Towards the end of his career, he played more as a centre-back for Milan. Favalli retired from football on July 1, 2010, at the age of 38.
Giuseppe Favalli's International Career
Favalli played for Italy at different age levels. He represented Italy's under-18 team. He also won the 1992 UEFA European Under-21 Championship and played in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona with the Italy under-21 team.
He played eight games for the main Italian senior side between 1994 and 2004. Favalli was part of the Italy squad for UEFA Euro 2004. He played only one game in that tournament, coming on as a substitute against Sweden. Italy did not perform as well as expected and left the tournament after the group stage.
