Gladwin is a small, unincorporated community located in Tucker County, West Virginia. An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Gladwin is special because it's found right where two streams, Glady Fork and Dry Fork, meet and flow into the larger Cheat River.
A Special Army School
Training Pack Mules
During World War II, from 1943 to 1944, something interesting happened near Gladwin. The U.S. Army set up a special school there. This school taught soldiers how to use pack mules. Pack mules are animals, like donkeys, that are trained to carry supplies and equipment, especially in tough, mountainous areas where vehicles can't go.
The West Virginia Maneuver Area
This mule school was part of a larger training area called the West Virginia Maneuver Area. Soldiers learned important skills for moving supplies in difficult terrain. This training helped them prepare for battles in places where roads were scarce or non-existent.
